The military was called for help in identifying the canister, roughly three feet by six inches, that washed up just before 9 p.m., Carr said.
By about 10:30 p.m. Carr said officials at the scene, in the area of Cypress Avenue and Waccamaw Boulevard in Garden City Beach, were comfortable that the item could be handled without the involvement of military. He said Horry County police and SLED agents were expected to dispose of it.
Immediately after learning of the item from people on the beach, police cordoned off an area about 100 yards north and south of the device and closed a beach access in the area to keep the public away.
None of the nearby condos were evacuated and none of the area streets were closed during the investigation, Carr said.
He said the area was blocked and bomb squad representatives were called out of caution.
He identified the item as being stamped with USA and a series of numbers.
No one was injured.
Charlene Krummel, visiting from Akron, Ohio, said she was walking on the beach as police arrived to retrieve the item from the water.
"It had 2005 U.S. military on it. … It was like 18 inches long. We happened to be walking along the beach right at the time the cops came."
Krummel said "some girl drug it up" and she said the girl said there was another item still beneath the water.
Carr could not confirm whether a girl found the item and he said there appeared to be one device found.
An investigation is ongoing.
