AP-SHELBY, N.C. — Authorities have detonated two dangerous homemade bombs in southwestern North Carolina but it’s unknown where the bombs came from.
The first bomb was discovered Monday on a busy stretch of U.S. 74 near Shelby. Police say a second bomb was found along the same road Tuesday, less than two miles away.
Both bombs were detonated by bomb squads from the Gaston County Police Department and the Gastonia Police Department.
A motorist alerted police Monday afternoon to a 6-inch-long device wrapped in silver tape with a fuse sticking out, resembling a stick of dynamite.
A Gastonia police spokesman said both devices shared similar characteristics.
At least one motorist drove over the first bomb, but it wasn’t set off.
The devices "would cause serious bodily injury if you were close to it when it was detonated," said Gastonia Police Sgt. Dean Conner.
The passer-by who alerted police to the bomb discovered Tuesday moved the bomb out of the roadway and into a grassy field, said Conner.
If you spot a suspicous device, "don’t move it, don’t cover it, don’t touch it and inform the authorities," said Capt. Edward Turres with the Gastonia Police Department.
Police have no information about who planted the bombs. They say the investigation is ongoing.
