I have friends who forward me emails from VSOs or conservative groups. I run them thru factcheck.org or snopes.com and point out that most or all of what is said is false. No, Oliver North was not saving his family from Osama bin Laden. North is still hiding out from drug charges in Costa Rica.
Heading our current crop of delusionals are the phony WMD denialists. We also have the "yes, an airliner hit the Pentagon but it was a little tiny one" folks and the people who believe the North Vietnamese and Senator McCain on POW issues.
The real litmus for gullible is the Reagan presidency issue. "Starwars collapsed Russia." "Honest government and full employment reigned!." Except that Russia now has "starwars" and all our money and we have nothing. How did we spent a trillion dollars and Russia ended up with, not only a missile defense system but a flourishing economy? Reagan helped, he helped alot.
His idea? Build an all powerful "ruling class" by flooding the country with illegal aliens, ending taxes for the rich and then allow the countries banking system to be looted through deregulation. Finish this off by borrowing hundreds of billions to cover up the thefts. Pile on more debt with StarWars and then falisfy test data when nothing works. To top it off, send our jobs overseas and let the armies of unemployed live under bridges. Welcome to the real Ronnie Raygun!
Topping it all off: Iran Contra, America’s biggest scandal.
Do many of you remember seeing President Reagan in the witness box saying over and over, "I can’t recall?" Anyone remember the massive influx of drugs into the US and the newspaper reports of planes delivering weapons to the "contra’s" and bringing back cocaine?
Presidents are usually murdered by political enemies. This one was shot by friends of his own Vice President. Was the fear of forgetting the difference between the truth and the lies almost the death of Reagan?
Does anyone remember us buying back our hostages in Lebanon by giving weapons, including "advanced missile systems" to Iran?
Anyone remember BCCI? This was a phony bank set up by Reagan folks for doing drug and weapons deals with people we later learned were going to be the enemies we are fighting now. Folks that thought that helping Saddam make poison gas and bioweapons was enough need to remember that we did much much worse under Reagan.
What really started during Reagan was the basic organization needed to destroy our financial systems, bury the United States in hopeless debt and allow Russia and China to dominate the world economy and assert economic dominance over Europe, Africa and Asia.
To even top that off, we now have a bankrupted economic system, no national health care, a military we can’t afford and are stuck in wars with no purpose other than to leave us helpless. How much is Reagan’s fault? Blame the fool who sold the lie used to bury America.
That world of "Reaganomics" which included "outsourcing" and "downsizing" ourselves to death built a generation of business school idiots. "Voodoo" economic theories taught us that outsourced jobs and worker income while allowing runaway inflation in the energy and health industries could be called supporting a "market economy." I call it insane. The next bizarre theory was to collateralize and underwite debt through shuffling worthless paper and fraudulently valued real estate portfolios in an endless circle replacing reality based fiscal policy.
Policial insiders made billions while ordinary Americans footed the bill.
Reagan set the tone for morals that would define a generation. His "family values" initiative quickly morphed into dozens of bribery, adultery and homosexuality scandals, all carefully wrapped in a unique version of Christianity based on deception and hate.
If you are wondering why America will be Hispanic in a few years, look no further. It was Ronnie Raygun helping out his friends, big agriculture and the union busting conspriracies of the US Chamber of Commerce and the National Association of Manufacturers, our "open border" lobby.
No man on Earth did so much talking about stopping illegal immigration and yet did absolutely nothing about it but in such an entertaining way as Ronnie.
If your kids are working for minimum wage or not at all or fighting an enemy Reagan helped build and arm, look no further. Sending jobs overseas and building Islamic extremism were his ideas. How are they working out for you?
If China and Russia don’t look so "collapsed" after all, armed to the teeth and drowning in our money, don’t look any further. After all, he was right about "trickle down." He was just wrong about where the money would trickle down to.
If you are 70 and looking for a job because your retirement was looted through "deregulation" and you hear we are paying hundreds of billions more to the same thieves, every one a "Reagan conservative" you know where to look.
If you wonder why our kids went to war with bad rifles, defective body armor and vehicles like the humvee or Bradley that you could poke a hold thru with a pencil, remember Ronnie Raygun.
If you want to know when you are listening to a total moron, ask them this question:
"Was Ronald Reagan a great president?"
Then ask him what Reagan’s greatest accomplishment was. Was it debt, unemployment, drug dealing or corruption? Was it arming Iran or building up Islamic terrorism?
See if they get it right.
