“This generation of Americans has a rendezvous with destiny.” When President Franklin D. Roosevelt made this statement he was referring to the soldiers of World War II; soldiers that fought not for the fame and recognition, but because it was the right thing to do.  And to quote reporter Tom Brokaw, “this is the greatest generation any society has produced.”

Today our World War II veterans are dying at the rate of 1500 per day.  Now more than ever, it’s time to acknowledge their sacrifices and make payment towards the debt of gratitude that is truly owed them.  We need to say "thank you" while there’s still time for them to hear those words; not just to Manchester Township’s veterans, but to ALL veterans of the Second World War.

ww2_400_01Traditionally, Manchester has had the privilege of honoring our nation’s veterans by way of tribute and lasting testimonies outside the regular observances of Memorial Day and Veterans Day.  In 2003 the Township unveiled its granite “Veterans War Memorial”; in July of 2004 “Tuskegee Airmen Park” was dedicated, with 5 of the original airmen in attendance; and in April of 2006 “POW-MIA Memorial Park” was dedicated.

In keeping with this tradition, Manchester is planning the construction of “World War II Veterans Memorial Park" to pay tribute to the heroic efforts of these soldiers.  The park is scheduled to open in April of 2010 and will be located in the Whiting section of the Township on a 30 acre site.  The focal point of the park will be a bronze statue of a World War II soldier referred to as “the Grunt,” along with a carved granite wall depicting scenes from the Second World War, representative of each branch of the Armed Services.

ww2a_400The cost of the statue and wall is estimated to be more than $125,000, and will be funded through voluntary donations from various businesses, veterans and fraternal clubs, non-profit organizations, citizens of Manchester and other communities, and all those who feel this is indeed a fitting tribute.

We are hopeful that we can enlist your support, through your generosity and your participation at the dedication ceremony on April 24, 2010.  Together with your help and that of many others, we will achieve our goal of producing a fitting and lasting expression of gratitude to the veterans of World War II who served our country unconditionally.  It is time to say “thank you.”

Sincerely,
