The iconic image of American troops blowing through bureaucratic BS as they carry out their mission endures in the film.
Boyington delivers.
I recommend seeing Pappy Boyington Field, A Campaign to Honor a Hero, a compelling documentary film by the first-time film maker, Gonzalez.
Most of us recall actor Robert Conrad playing Boyington in the popular 1970’s television series, "Baa Baa Black Sheep," based on Boyington’s best-selling book published in 1958.
Pappy Boyington Field, A Campaign to Honor a Hero offers a rigorous look at this time of our country and the people who fought who live as the best our country has to offer.
Writes Gonzalez:
During World War II, Major Gregory ‘Pappy’ Boyington led a squadron of fighter pilots known as the ‘Black Sheep’ of VMF-214. The accomplishments of these Marine Corps Pilots was legendary. ‘Pappy’s’ aggressive fighting spirit helped him earn the Ace designation five times over.
Born in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho in 1912, ‘Pappy’ became one of the most decorated Aviators in World War II. Veterans Groups and community members battled against bureaucracy for years to add a commemorative name to the local airport to honor him…and the campaign was not without controversy. This is their story.
