UK Gulf War Veteran Cause of Death and Pension Appeal Tribunal

Second case from UK in least than a month that has hit the newswires(article follows).  The first case related to depleted uranium cause and this case involved the PB tabs. The factor discussed here is high blood pressure.

The cause of death is not totally given.  It would seem again that diagnosed illnesses data is not being given here or in the UK so that medical providers have any idea of what is being seen by the total population of gulf war veterans.

The secrets and data not being shared is unacceptable!  Doctors, Researchers, and Medical professionals are still being kept blinded both in the VA and in civilian medical providers.

And most of all the patients, the veterans are not aware of what their risk factors are in relation to Cardiac problems, Strokes, Pulmonary emboli, or any of the multitude of diagnosed illnesses that can lead to a shortened life.  AS the old nurse that believed in patient education I find this totally unacceptable.  Our Veterans deserve better.  How can veterans receive adequate screening for these illnesses when data is not openly available?

Gulf war veteran’s death ‘natural causes’
A minister has denied that the death a former soldier was caused by the consumption of nerve agent pre-treatment (NAP) tablets which he was required to take during his service.

In the House of Lords on Tuesday Lord Lloyd of Berwick, a former senior judge, asked the government for a response to the decision of the Pensions Appeal Tribunal in the case of Michael John Kozac.

It ruled that that his death in October 2003 was directly attributable to high blood pressure caused by the consumption of NAP tablets during his service in Gulf operations in 1990 to 1991.

Baroness Taylor, minister for international defence and security, repeated the coroner’s ruling that attributed Kozac’s death to natural causes.

Contributing factors were identified as being his Gulf war service, and the attack which led to his hospitalisation.

However, the NAP tablets were not a direct contributing factor to his death, she told peers.

Lord Berwick expressed concern that the four-year wait between Kozac’s death and his widow’s appeal for compensation to the Ministry of Defence reflected a general lack of concern in the ministry towards ex-servicemen and their families.

Baroness Taylor reiterated that his death was caused by natural causes, and that although in this case this affected the widow’s compensation rights, the ministry was "committed" to supporting all veterans.

Several backbench peers pointed out that the case could be seen as a landmark ruling for Gulf veterans and asked what the effects of this could be.

The minister made the House aware that the case could not set a precedent in legal terms, although she believed it was useful in highlighting the complex issues behind the relatively recently introduced Compensation Scheme 2005, which is due for review soon.

Baroness Taylor concluded by saying that she wanted financial support for veterans and their families to continue to be based on "need and not the basis of any label attached to them".
