WASHINGTON -(Dow Jones)- President Obama is pushing for a proposal that would provide seniors, veterans and people with disabilities a $250 payment, extending for one year a program initially included in the $787 billion economic-stimulus plan.

"These payments will provide aid to more than 50 million people in the coming year, relief that will not only make a difference for them, but for our economy as a whole, complementing the tax cuts we’ve provided working families and small businesses through the Recovery Act," Obama said in a statement.

The White House said 57 million people would benefit from the extension, which would cost $13 billion.
