American jihadists are not what we think they are. Most are wealthy and well educated.

and Canadian Jihadists areTime Magazine online has an insightful article tonight that will destroy your stereotype of the poor and barely literate Muslim immigrant to America as the homegrown jihadist we all fear. It is simply not true judged by looking at past offenders.  The article, Defying Stereotypes, Most Domestic ‘Jihadists’ Are Educated, Well-Off , shows how the stereotype we hold of jihadists might be comforting but it is dead wrong.

This anomaly makes it difficult for law enforcement to track and find these people because their participation or potential participation in jihad defies the normal criterion for violent criminal activity in America.  They are from backgrounds that normally do not breed violent criminals in this country.

This should give us all pause.  What do we do with this information? What is this really telling us about the jihadists? What is this telling us about ourselves and about our tendency to over-simplify a complex cultural phenomenon among American Muslims and their allies here at home that endangers all of us?
