Peter Beinart’s piece in the New York Review of Books on Israel and its leading propaganda apparatus in America demonstrate just how militaristic Israel has become as its pretensions to a democracy move further to the farcical.
Beinart is a blow-in-the-wind politico who previously echoed the Bush-Cheney Iraq Invasion lies.
Now, Beinart is warning that a generation of young American Jewry has become disenchanted and alienated from Israel.
Though Beinart is very polite about it, his is another warning shot at this rogue state that Palestinians are indeed human.
Writes Beinart on the response of Jewish college students who participated in a focus group run by Republican pollster Frank Luntz:
Most of the students, in other words, were liberals, broadly defined. They had imbibed some of the defining values of American Jewish political culture: a belief in open debate, a skepticism about military force, a commitment to human rights. And in their innocence, they did not realize that they were supposed to shed those values when it came to Israel. The only kind of Zionism they found attractive was a Zionism that recognized Palestinians as deserving of dignity and capable of peace, and they were quite willing to condemn an Israeli government that did not share those beliefs. Luntz did not grasp the irony. The only kind of Zionism they found attractive was the kind that the American Jewish establishment has been working against for most of their lives.
Beinart’s analysis on Israel is an example of a power establishment being dragged back to humanity, much as Beinart repudiated his own pro-war foolishness.
