MARCY KAPTUR FUMBLES VET FUNDRAISER

By Nick Haupricht for VT

Six months ago, I was approached by Ohio Rep. Marcy Kaptur (Dem) to organize a veterans monument in Toledo using a left over “stone” from the World War II Memorial in Washington.  Six months later and thousands and thousands of dollars spent, no stone, no memorial, no support and lots of misinformation, inaccurate information and a member of congress running away at full speed.  Why?

Along with the memorial for Toledo, slated for the grounds of the new VA medical complex, there was to be a display of military artifacts, part of the thousands of pieces in storage here from a museum closed years ago.  Up to ten million dollars of antiques, one of the countries largest collections from 5 wars was supposed to be in storage.  It all disappeared with the fingerprints of local politicians, veterans group leaders and judges everywhere to be seen.

So, when local groups, veterans motorcyclists, activists and supporters got together to honor Rep. Kaptur for her help, help that never came, those involved in the project honoring American heroes became “personna non grata”….to be avoided at all costs.

Events were cancelled, I resigned as Chairman of the memorial commission, with thousands out of pocket, money from my “earnings” as a 100% disabled Vietnam vet, USMC.  Attempts to reach Rep. Kaptur have been fruitless, scheduled meetings with staffers have been ducked, even one today.

Now I find that spending thousands of my own dollars on what should have been a govenment project, money spent with the full encouragement and authorization of Kaptur’s staff was wrong.  They never should have pushed things they were never authorized to be involved in much less have a disabled vet finance it all.

Worse, I can only imagine the pressure being put on local Democrats because so many prominent people have been caught with their fingers in the til.

Whenever I go out to my car, I find two things, Rep. Kaptur’s vest, meant to be awarded to her by a local vets group and a sample memorial stone.  I also have hundreds of pages of evidence, now with the FBI, outlining one of the greatest thefts of military history ever.
