Draftee Reserve and other Myths from Vietnam

Young American men were drafted into the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy and yes, the United States Marine Corp too. (Note: Corp is pronounced CORE as in apple core – our Commander in Chief once said “corpse” or “corpsemen” instead of “Corp” when referring to Navy Corpmen.”) during the Vietnam war.

Vietnam War PosterTwenty-five% (25%) of forces serving in-county were draftees. Thrity-four% (34%) of the combat deaths were draftees. Further – 5,977 reservists were killed in Vietnam. The National Guard, long believed to be a haven for draft evaders sent 6,140 members to Vietnam. One hundred and one (101) of them were killed.

Ninety percent (90%) of those who saw heavy combat in Vietnam are proud to have served their country. (data – “Facts Vs Fiction ….. The Vietnam Veteran”)

Young Americans – from all walks of life and ethic groups have always stepped forward to serve the United States. They don’t make the wars. Warfare is the province of governments and twisted belief systems. Honor those who serve – and do not run away or offer excuses, i.e. “I have a bad back” (or some other lame excuse) or “I was in college” Military service during warfare takes courage.

Not eveyone has it.

Those who serve, no matter if they were drafted or a member of the reserve forces serve with honor and pride. The Vietnam Solider, Sailor, Marine, Airman and Coast Guardsmen served with courage, honor and dedication. Young Americans have a long history of honorable service with the military. To believe otherwise is in conflict with the facts of history. Sure, there are examples of exceptions, 90% is however, very difficult to dispute.
