A picture really does say a thousand words at the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center in Charleston, SC. Lining the hallways of the first floor of the medical center are photo portraits of over 80 Lowcountry Veterans.
The pictured Veterans include those who are patients and employees of the center – the homeless, nursing home residents, amputees, and others who have faced war. The artist behind the display is Stacy Pearsall, an Air Force Veteran who receives care at the medical center. “My inspiration was born out of the many Veterans I met during my long recovery at the VA hospital,” Pearsall said. “The heroic stories of selflessness and sacrifice inspired me to start taking their portraits and telling their stories. Men and women, young and old, World War II and Vietnam — it didn’t matter, they were all my fellow Veterans and we all have a story.” Pearsall was a combat photographer and was presented the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for her service in Iraq in 2007. Included among her honors is Military Photographer of the Year; the first woman to receive the award.
