The Washington, D.C., VA Medical Center (DCVAMC) celebrated the grand opening of VA’s first model community for veterans in October.

Called “Independence Way™,” the simulated “main street” is meant to assist in rehabilitation using “real life” situations like trips to the bank, supermarket, bus stop or Metro station. Designed and created by Patricia A. Moore, a noted gerontologist and industrial and environmental designer, the stage set-like unit is part of the medical center’s Physical Medicine and Rehabilitative Service and Polytrauma Program.

The complex of simulated streets and shops will help veterans with various medical conditions, including those who have neurological conditions that affect mobility and those who have suffered a stroke, prepare for community re-entry within the safe and therapeutic setting of the medical center. A unique rehabilitation tool for all veterans, DCVAMC’s Independence Way™ is a first for VA and will help ensure the coordination of lifelong rehabilitation services as veterans progress from acute care settings to home environments.
