The plant featured in the video below was General Motors, then Delphi Automotive. Years ago, I tried to pick it up for the state’s Department of Corrections as a training facility and prison. The whining, “yellow peril” is just that, whining. Saginaw has unemployment of 40% or more. This plant is one of the few rays of hope in a region that was pure General Motors, pure automotive, a region just north of Flint, made famous in the ‘Roger and Me’ film by Michael Moore.
Dear America,
Take the jobs, accept the help, learn the lessons. China may be our last friend. Time to grow up. Nobody is stealing America’s patent for the buggy whip. This plant makes power steering units. Some of the patents come from the Saginaw Product Company in 1919.
I drive past here still. I got used to looking at the empty parking lot and the even more empty shopping centers and the lonely downtown that used to be a bustling city, Saginaw, Michigan.
Americans can work with their hands, we aren’t a nation of financial crooks, torturers and welfare cheats. I am glad China sees that. General Motors had shipped the jobs to Mexico.
It took China to bring them back.
