Conservatives Attack On Public Sector Workers

Bottom Feeders: Conservative radio and talk show personalities have longed harangued the public regarding public sector employees. An object of vilification has become the lot of public employees from some sectors of our American society. Many people believe a radio personality, Rush Limbaugh is effective and accurate representative of conservatism in America. Today, February 18, 2011 between 1210 p.m. and 100 p.m., Mr. Limbaugh said words to the effect:

Public Employees are BOTTOM FEEDING LOWLIFES

Answers.com defines a public employee as “Person employed in the public sector…” Conservatism historically was an ardent supported of certain public sector employees. Consider current public employee – BOTTOM FEEDING LOWLIFES:

1. Law Enforcement

• City Police Officers
• Sheriff’s Deputies
• State Police Officers or State Troopers
• United States Marshall Service
• United States Secret Service
• Federal Bureau of Investigation
• United States Border Patrol
• United States Forest Service Enforcement Officers
• United States Postal Service Inspectors
• Capital Police (Uniform division – United States Capital, Washington D.C.)
• United States Custom Service
• Department of Veterans Affairs Uniform Police Officers
• Drug Enforcement Administration
• Private Security Staff and Private Police (with government arrest authority)
• Native American Tribal Police
• Internal Revenue Service Investigators

2. Corrections

• Federal Corrections Officers
• State Corrections Officers
• County Level Corrections Officers
• Local Lockup Officers

3. Military and Government Agencies

7. The Wounded / Injured (military – Law Enforcement – Corrections)

• Wounded from Vietnam
• Wounded from Grenada
• Wounded from Panama
• Wounded from the Gulf War
• Wounded from Somalia
• Wounded from the current War on Terror
• Wounded from every brush fire war the United States gets involved in.
• Wounded Law Enforcement from the County – State – Federal levels.
• Wounded Corrections from the Local – County – State – Federal Levels and private contracted levels.
• Injured Officers and members of the military from all levels.

8. Every dedicated American who serves the public, gives their best effort and yes, wants to be paid what is due them based on a MUTUAL agreement with the employer.

Conservative Organizations i.e. The Heritage Foundation have a posted paper advocating reduction in Veterans Benefits including one-half of the 100% permanently disabled Vets monthly income. Nationally known politicians have posted similar demands for reductions in Vet benefits.

There is a concerted effort by conservative individuals, media, politicians and organizations to demean Public Sector Employees. One Fox News Business analyst commonly refers to Public Sector Employees as “ON THE DOLE”. My view is this is conservative talk for how dare Public Sector Employees demand that mutually agreed upon retirement benefits is paid them. Union contracts, retirement and other benefits are the product of MUTAL AGREEMENT! Mr. Limbaugh does not, to my knowledge inform people that the pay and benefits of Public Sector Employees is created as a matter of law, rules, regulations and labor agreements.

People recently elected to local, county, state and federal offices are working at fever pitch to reduce costs. Public service and safety are at risk. Slow, reasoned approached to complex labor, financial and regulatory issues are needed. Not the “meat axe” approach being used at all levels of government today. Moderates are sorely needed in America. I know, I know, Mr. Limbaugh does not like moderates. I have heard say Moderates will not take a stand on an issue. Well, he is wrong. Moderates approach an issue with problem solving skills. Conservatives and their opposite number, Liberals tend to get radical. The geographical terrain feature can be difficult to observe when one can not see trees.

We have a huge problem in America. I have written about proposals by Conservatives to destroy the ability of the wounded to have an acceptable life style. Now Conservatives are pursing, with success Public Sector Employees at all levels. If the Conservatives succeed, there are not enough bridges for all the Public Sector Employees to live under. Now that folks, is a problem.

Voices of reason need to prevail.

Dale R. Suiter

Dale R. Suiter served in the United States Marine Corps June 1966 – February – 1970. He served with Ammo Company First FSR, 2nd CAG Q-6 and Q-3, H&S 81’s 3/9 and 1/3. His service “On the Rock” was with Ordanance Schools, Camp Hansen. Following the Marine Corp, he completed a career in public service – prison and jail operations. In addition, he completed a career as a reserve officer with the Michigan Army National Guard. His two sons and two sons-in-law are veterans of the war on terror. The family continues in service to the United States of America.
