LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) — Louisville will launch the first ever veterans court in Kentucky.  The court will give veterans services and programs that are not available to average civilians. A federal grant is covering the cost of the court.

The court aims to be a problem solving agent of the criminal justice system.  It’s not a “get out of a jail free pass” for veterans, instead the court takes the extra step to make sure those battling substance abuse, mental disorders or PTSD are being addressed.

Kentucky will now be one of 20 states that have veterans court. Currently there are about 300 veterans incarcerated at Louisville Metro Corrections. Veterans court hopes to help rehabilitate former service members so they don’t end up in jail or homeless.
