Mike Dumke is the Founder and CEO of Driver Please, Inc., a company that offers a groundbreaking and totally turnkey business opportunity that capitalizes on the exploding demand for affordable personal driving services. He recently took some time out of his busy schedule as a successful entrepreneur to share his thoughts and insights on small business startup and ownership with BusinessOpportunity.com’s Entrepreneur Exchange readers, using their most often asked questions as a place to start.
Here is what Mike had to say…
How does someone know if they have what it takes to own their own business?
Most people have what it takes to own their own business; it really comes down to finding a business that you are interested in and provides operational, marketing and financial “how-to” so you don’t have to figure it out on your own. It is also a good idea to understand your strengths and identify those areas where you need assistance. For example, if you don’t have any knowledge of accounting, then it is a good idea to find a bookkeeper and accountant so you can focus on your strengths.
Tell us a bit about how you made the decision to become a business owner/entrepreneur and why.
The independence and freedom to create something was a big reason for me. I have always enjoyed operating small businesses and, although it can be hard work, the fulfillment you get after a satisfying day/week/month can’t be touched when working for someone else.
What was the biggest challenge you faced in your first six months in business?
Being a new concept there wasn’t really any other company to learn from. That meant we had to create everything from operational systems to marketing campaigns on our own. That is time-consuming and expensive.
How did you meet that challenge?
We worked very hard in the beginning to put the proper systems in place, and we tested everything. Even though we were pretty sure we had things right after testing them, operating a successful business is about constant tweaking and improvement.
What is the single strongest piece of advice you would have for someone just starting out in business for themselves?
Find a business that has clear demand from the customer group you intend to service or sell to. All of the systems, procedures, etc. can’t substitute for lack of demand. Also, it is important to find a business that interests you.
What would you say is the one thing that new business owners forget about or overlook when they’re just planning/starting out?
It takes some time to establish your business and “get the word out.” I find many owners try to “shotgun” their marketing efforts and their message is diluted, and therefore lost, in the marketplace, which is already crowded and noisy.
What marketing strategies have you found to be most successful in growing your business?
Referrals. Marketing is expensive and only getting more so. In addition, there are lots of businesses vying for your customers’ attention. Nothing beats having a satisfied customer tell their friends and associates about you!
What is it about the business/industry you are in that made it so attractive to you?
Being a new service that has very little competition means we had the ability to establish a clientele before lots of other companies entered the marketplace. Also, the variety of customer groups that can use our service means there is a large pool of potential customers. Providing a service that is good for the community I live in and very much needed felt very good…especially when driving seniors, who can’t get out without our service.
What process do you follow to successfully close on a lead and make the final sale? Any tips?
I have found that there is a dramatic difference in closure rates based on how our service is described to a potential customer. We experienced a closure increase of more than 80% by emphasizing key aspects of our service. It’s all about testing and optimizing your approach.
If you work from home, what are the greatest benefits to doing so? What are the drawbacks, and how do you manage them?
One big benefit is cost. Not having to pay rent for an office or retail store space is huge. It significantly reduces your risk. Other benefits are that you don’t have to commute, and you work only when you want to…working from home enhances your lifestyle!
What is/are your favorite motto and/or quote when it comes to business? Any final words of encouragement and/or inspiration for the budding entrepreneur?
Follow your passion, and don’t be afraid to dream big. You can’t catch a fish unless you go fishing! I think this applies to lots of areas in life, especially starting your own business!
