Burglar Proof Your Home

To burglar proof your home is to make your home as unattractive to burglars as possible. Unfortunately, burglars are experts at working out whether people are at home or if a property is empty. In order to prevent burglaries you must first understand why they target certain properties. Burglars are opportunists. If they see an open window and no one appears to be in, they will use it to gain access to the property. If a house is completely locked up, in a busy street with neighbours milling about, they are unlikely to target the property.

Burglars often target areas that are outside the immediate area in which they live. They ensure they study the area well, look for possible escape routes, check for people being around during the day and the movements of the people in houses they are looking to target. If they see an open window or a poorly constructed door, they will take the opportunity to break in. If a burglar is particularly desperate, they get more reckless, often not caring where they steal from and so are more likely to take risks and burgle properties nearer where they live and in a more daring manner.
Burglars are most likely to gain access to a property through doors so make sure yours are strong and have adequate locks, preferably five lever deadbolts. You should also ensure the door frame itself is strong. It’s all very well having a strong door but if the door frame is questionable in strength the door could easily be kicked in, allowing a burglar access to your home. Some burglars have no problem with this kind of approach to gaining access to your property – yes it makes a noise but if the door is weak enough it will go through instantly and they will have quick access into the property. Dyno can provide 24 hour emergency locksmiths to help reduce the likelihood of this ever happening to you by increasing security – or to help secure your property should the worst happen.

Of course securing your property is the best way to prevent a burglar from gaining access to it. Other ways to put burglars off targeting your property are to keep windows locked so they cannot climb through open windows into your home and to keep anything valuable out of sight of the windows. If they can see it they will want to get to it. The same goes for empty boxes of expensive items left in the front garden ready for the bin men to collect, it’s practically advertising you have high end items within your home and acts almost as a shop front from which burglars can pick and choose. Keep keys away from front doors to prevent them from reaching through the letterbox with a pole or a hanger to hook them onto and either open your door using a key or steal your car.

Take a good look at your property and put yourself in the shoes of a burglar. Would it look like an attractive prospect for a burglary to you? If so, don’t put it off, make some changes to safeguard your home and your property today.
