The Complex Laws Around Online Gambling Around The World

The internet has made it possible for companies to offer services to people all over the world, regardless of their base location.
While in most cases the only time this can get complicated from a legal or financial standpoint is when it comes to things like tax on purchases made between countries, where things like gambling, which countries take very different legal standpoints on, are concerned, it can be pretty complex.
From a technological perspective, an online casino or sports betting site can let people anywhere in the world access its services, and can take payments and pay out winnings using a number of methods, but this isn’t legal for everyone.
The USA Situation
A lot of people think that online gambling is ‘banned’ in America. On actual fact, the law is a little more complicated than that. It is not illegal for a US resident to take part in online gambling, but there are laws making it very difficult for him or her to deposit money into their online gambling account or receive payments from the casino when they win. For this reason, many online gambling sites can’t accept American players, but there are some that can, though only using certain payment methods.
Europe
The EU doesn’t have an umbrella policy on what member states can and can’t do in terms of gambling, leaving it down to the government of each country to decide. In almost all of Europe, with the exceptions of Greece and Cyprus, internet gambling in one form or another is accepted, though in some countries only sites which have been granted a license by the relevant government are allowed to operate. Europe is one of the biggest markets in the world for online gambling, with a lot of very popular services like Euro Palace Casino Mobile Games based there are marketed strongly at a European audience (though players from other parts of the world can join them too, where permitted).
Asia
While gambling is a popular traditional pass time in many Asian cultures, a lot of countries have pretty strict laws around it. In China, Japan, both North and South Korea, Hong Kong, Vietnam and Thailand online gambling is banned. In India and Pakistan, however, it is legal and highly popular.
Australasia
Australia is the biggest gambling nation in the world, with the highest gambling expenses per capita. As you might expect then, online gambling is legal here, though there are laws relating to which companies can set up and operate there. New Zealand, on the other hand, has completely banned online gambling.
Obviously there are many other countries not discussed here which all have their own unique laws about whether their residents can play games for money online, and whether casino companies can be registered or operate on their shores. All of this makes running online casinos a complicated, if lucrative, business.
