Johnson VS Cox – First Round Goes To Nash Bridges

“Sonny” from Miami Vice is at it again, this time in his real life role as Don Johnson.  While best known for the 80’s show set in Florida’s hottest city, Don Johnson also had a fantastic cop show in the 90s with Cheech Marin called Nash Bridges, set in San Francisco.
Nash Bridges is the show currently being contested in a Los Angeles court.  Four years ago Johnson was awarded 50% of copyright ownership of the Nash Bridges show which entitled him to syndication rights and royalties.  This came after a lawsuit filed by Johnson against the production companies involved in making the series as the terms of his contract were not met.  Though the settlement was awarded in 2010, all involved have been fighting over the multi-million dollar payout.  While Johnson has been paid and has moved on with his life, the other production companies are suing each other over who was responsible for this happening in the first place and who is owed additional funds.
The real heart of the issue here is how litigious American society is, especially among its top income earners.  Over 15 million civil cases are filed annually in the United States.  With 80% of the world’s lawyers living in the United States, it’s no wonder (and most of these are in New York to no surprise).  While some of these cases are for legitimate injuries and harm done, some are just frivolous and ridiculous.  Most recently a case in Michigan was thrown out where a man was suing Budweiser for false advertising.  In their commercials, beautiful women materialized out of thin air in front of drinkers of the beer.  The man was upset when the beer he purchased did not produce these results.
While most people filing a lawsuit are hoping for a big payout, the fact is that few ever reach their “champagne wishes and caviar dreams” of becoming multi-millionaires.  However, those that do reach a settlement, or court ordered payout often find they are waiting months or years to ever see the money they are owed.  Because of this growing need in the marketplace, lawsuit funding companies have popped up around the nation.  This essentially works like receivables purchasing done by businesses.  The lawsuit funding company will buy your settlement for 80 to 90 cents on the dollar and give you an immediate payout.  They then collect the funds from the original source, making the difference back over time.  This has proven to be a fantastic way for all parties to get what they deserve.
America is not the only country with a list of unnecessary and ridiculous lawsuits.  In China, Jian Feng and his wife had a baby . . . an ugly baby.  Being that his wife was incredibly beautiful Feng questioned her extensively.  She admitted that before they were married she had undergone extensive plastic surgery.  Feng sued his wife for allowing them to get married under false pretenses and he actually won.  $120,000 in damages were awarded to Mr. Feng.
