A Visual Arts Carnival Extravaganza This Weekend

Welcome to Carnival – Rio Style
I never made it to the Rio Carnival. The closest I got to one was Barbados, and folks there said the Real One was in Trinidad. But the headwaters of of all Carnivals as you are about to see, is The City of Samba.
Our VT foray into the arts was spawned by the personal interests of our editors and our desire to provide our busy readers with gem picks that they might never see.
Everything you see posted in these film and the concerts series are from my ‘best of’ personal files I have compiled to entertain myself…things I can watch and listen to over and over and never get tired of them.
We start out tonight with a magnificent film on the 2011 Rio Carnival called the City of Samba. The new HD time lapse camera rigs have birthed a whole new visual art form. But here we have great art piled onto great art.
The beauty of Rio de Janiero rolls out our feature film. A new technique of selected focus allows the editor to pull your eye into a certain area while soft focusing the rest of the scene, giving it a dreamlike quality.
The HD is so clear, even the distant shots, that at first I thought I was watching top grade animation work. So the artist succeeded in taking me to a new place artistically.
The carnival float scenes are really beyond description in words. I won’t even try. If the aliens land first during Carnival and see this show, the planet might be spared destruction and made an art preserve by our new keepers. I have never seen anything so extravagant before, and the time lapse presentation makes it even more dramatic.

Next up, a gem find of Northern Lights footage in the land of the cold…like -25C cold, a place you will never find yours truly. I was surprised to find that the cameras would work under those temperatures. This is from TSO Photography:
I spent a week capturing one of the biggest aurora borealis shows in recent years. Shot in and around Kirkenes and Pas National Park bordering Russia, at 70 degree north and 30 degrees east. Temperatures around -25 Celsius. Good fun.

In our last feature, video artist Simon Christen takes us to San Francisco to share scenes that none of us would ever have seen. This is called The Unseen Sea…a creative presentation of Frisco under the sea of mist and fog that it often enjoys.
Another triple play here folks, the artistic beauty of the city, the time lapse shooting adding more drama, and Christen’s carefully chosen shoot locations above the mist to present us an entirely new perspective of the city on the bay.
It takes a lot of talent to take on a subject that has been photographed and filmed to the nth degree and come up with something new. Christen has donethat and earned a salute from VT.
