U.S. Army Veteran Keith Orr Recognized Nationally for Outstanding Success with Home Repair and Handyman Services Franchise Handyman Matters®

WILMINGTON, Del. – Infantryman, Paratrooper and Leader of Men – three titles that describe the recipient of this year’s The Entrepreneur’s Source (E-Source) Client of the Year award. Keith Orr, Sergeant First Class (Retired) U.S. Army, and franchisee of Handyman Matters of Northern Delaware – received the prestigious award from the company’s annual conference this past September.
Following a nearly quarter century in the U.S. Army, Orr met his E-Source coach at a “Hiring Our Heroes” career fair in Ft. Jackson, South Carolina. Handyman Matters was a perfect fit for Orr, and success came quickly – Orr turned a profit in his eighth month.
Orr’s career in the U.S. Army spanned 24 years: he started as a Private and quickly moved up in rank and began to fulfill his potential for leadership. During that time he held numerous leadership positions including Fire Team Leader, Squad Leader, Ammunition Chief, Operations NCO, Infantry Platoon Sergeant, Bradley Section Leader, Platoon Sergeant/Master Gunner and finally Senior Instructor/Writer. In his final position with the U.S. Army, his daily duties were mostly administrative and Orr seized the opportunity to prepare for his exit into civilian life. Orr then met Matt Thornton, his E-Source coach and friend. They worked together to find a path that would provide Orr the lifestyle he wanted for himself and his family, in addition to utilizing his acutely developed skills.
“It has been a pleasure working with Keith. His leadership, management, critical thinking and team work skills developed through 24 years in the U.S. Army prepared him well for entrepreneurship,” said Thornton. “Keith followed the E-Source discovery process and determined Handyman Matters was a good fit for him. We will continue to help each other as we grow our businesses.”
Orr was drawn to Handyman Matters because of the autonomy of the business – namely the camaraderie between franchisees and the trust between franchisor and franchisee, giving the business a family feel. In growing his business, Orr is mastering the world of social media and has become a savvy networker. Beyond working together to find his ideal franchise, Orr and Thornton still collaborate monthly.
“He’s very interested in helping veterans, so I’ve been giving him insight into how to connect with them and show his value in the community,” said Orr. “In return, he talks to me about how to navigate the business world; he’s been a business coach and a great resource to me.”
In Thornton’s words Keith is everything good about this country, and is well deserving of this award. He reentered the civilian world after over two decades and has been thriving as a new entrepreneur. His success spans decades, countries and industries and will not stop at this first entrepreneurial venture.
