The Alibaba group has taken to more than offering cheap knockoff watches or billions of tons of imaginary sugar to an unready and unsuspecting world.  They are now seeking passports, financial records and national ID card copies for their millions of clients.  They claim that they need this for “security reasons.”  If it were only fraud they were protecting themselves from or more likely perpetrating, it would be different.

They are data mining in support of a security organization tied to the Chinese government.

Imagine that, in order to buy a card of watch batteries for $1.25, you are asked to submit copies of your credit card statement and passport?  Failing to do so qualifies you for “penalties” for violating Alibaba “security policy.”  This is espionage, nothing else.

Bankers who work in oil and gas or metals and food commodities have always known about Alibaba.com and its newest incarnation, AliExpress.  They were always a running joke; “Where did you find this guy, ‘ Alibaba?'”  At any given time, Alibaba was selling a million percent of the worlds crude oil, offered to the nations of the world by fraudsters living over noodle shops pretending to be commodity traders.  Their numbers are staggering.

Each either represented an imaginary member of the Saudi royal family or a group of ship or refinery owners.  You can buy all the sugar in Brazil, all the tea in China, you can submit letters of credit, transfer millions of dollars, it will all disappear overnight as “Noodleshop Charlie” gets on his bike and rides to the Mercedes dealership.

Thousands of legitimate merchants sell through Alibaba and other platforms.  However, tens of thousands of criminals operate openly on what is now the world’s largest trading platform.

Now it has gone a step further, an organization selling Libya’s oil, or the Kirkuk light that ISIS and the Iraqi army are fighting over at this writing, now wants to have your bank statement.

Have they lost their minds?
