All in a Day: Making Sales Goals and Getting Them Done on Time

There are only so many hours in the day, so how do some people seem to get 5 days worth of work done in just 3 days? Answer: time blocking. It’s an incredibly effective method of time management. And, if you’re not using it, you’re losing out. Here’s how to schedule days within days and get more done.
Group Daily Activities By Type
When blocking your day out, start by grouping similar activities by type. For example, you could group all phone calls together and create a block of time during your day to handle all phone calls. Sometimes, this isn’t always practical. But, you should do the best you can to stick to these time blocks.
Then, assign the blocks of time to hours of the day. So, you might set aside 30 minutes in the morning to make all of your daily phone calls. You might then set aside an hour to do some research on new products or vendors.
When the block of time is up, it’s time to stop what you’re doing and take a quick 15 minute break. Then, move on to the next block.
Assign Your Most Important, Conceptual Tasks, Early In the Day
Assigning your most conceptual and mentally-challenging tasks early on in the day is important because its those tasks that require the most brain power and, thus, the most energy. Performing them when you’re “fresh” gives you the best results.
For example, if you use this mortgage software to manage your mortgage leads, you’ll probably want to do things like contacting prospects early on in the day. Why? Because that’s when you’re the sharpest.
As the day drags on, you start to lose mental power because, like a muscle, your brain will fatigue and you won’t be able to think as clearly or with as much clarity as you could when you first got up out of bed.
Stay Disciplined
It’s hard to stick with something for the long-term when you don’t really enjoy doing it. So, forming discipline can seem impossible for some tasks. This is where habit-building can make things easier.
Create a system that makes it uncomfortable for you not to do the things you need to do to accomplish your goals. For example, you could set alarms that are quite annoying when a block of time is up. Rather than push through it, and get stuck in a rut, you’ll be incentivized to take a break and move on.
Make Firm Goals
Goal-setting is an underutilized method of improving sales outcomes. Unbelievably, a lot of individuals don’t use time blocking and goal-setting because they don’t “get” the value of goal-setting.
Goals should be made daily and weekly in the form of affirmations. You should set daily targets for metric-driven tasks and list the benefits of completing your goal as well as the obstacles that stand in your way.
If you do this, you’ll have a clear path laid out in front of you, a means to achieve your goals, and you’ll know how to overcome obstacles that stand in your way.
