[ Editor’s Note: Well we have not seen much from Col. Anthony Shaffer in a while. I was wondering where he had gone off to and up he pops today on Press TV with a timely topic.
The US Asia Pivot game has been a sleight of hand scam from the beginning. China’s military expenditures have always been modest compared to the US because they have decades of infrastructure work they were pouring most of their money into to modernize their country.
China has no force projection power to be an offensive threat. On the contrary it has its hands full defending its border areas from the usual Western intrigues, “Do what we say our we’ll send our military your way.”
But we have our Pentagon once again trying to cast China’s increasing defensive military modernization in the face of the real threat that we represent, as a “threat” to us. Even for the slow witted, the Pentagon gave you a big clue when the term our “national security interests” was exchange for the more flexible “our interests”.
The “financial” part of it is silent, but it is there. Someone must have figured that our military taking their oaths to defend the country might have some problem reconciling being in effect an offensive mercenary army for US multinationals and the mega rich like the Bush family.
So look at the major infrastructure projects being initiated by the targets of this US Asian aggression, always in the tens of billions.
They are winning the “War on Infrastructure projects” when neither Europe of the US and Canada have anything to compare.
The Eurasians are building a future for their citizens while the West is eating its young. Our biggest threat is poor leadership and our political structure’s too cozy relationship with international organized crime, so they need some far away bogeymen as threat distractions. The Obama administration’s policy to rebalance its focus from the Middle East toward Asia and the Pacific is a “completely hollow” strategy aimed at distracting attention from US difficulties elsewhere, a retired US Army commander says.
“The entire pivot to Asia that includes this new information about this renewal of the [Asia pivot] plan is completely hollow,” said Lieutenant Colonel Anthony Shaffer, a senior fellow at both the London Center for Policy Research and the Center for Advanced Defense Studies (CADS).
“The whole concept has no real merit regarding strategy or strategic thinking,” Shaffer told Press TV on Tuesday. “It is a way of the Pentagon trying to distract attention from the problems in the Middle East.”
US Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter will be making his first official trip to Japan and South Korea this week to revive the so-called Asia “pivot” strategy amid China’s rapid military modernization.
Carter will leave from Washington on Monday to Japan, and later to South Korea for talks aimed at “strengthening and modernizing America’s alliances in Northeast Asia,” according to a Pentagon statement.
Carter was a supporter of what the Obama administration calls its “rebalance” to Asia while he was serving as the deputy secretary of defense.
The Obama administration is trying to keep its focus on a widely advertised shift to Asia, which it has pursued since 2011. The White House argues that no region is more important to the United States’ long-term interests than Asia.
A new assessment released Thursday by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, argues that the Obama administration’s Asia pivot has not been successful and American power and influence in the region has been declining.
