HILLSBORO, Ore. — State tax records are raising more questions about the way a Washington County nonprofit designed to help veterans is operating.
The Oregon Veterans Resource Center is facing a lawsuit for fraud, just two years after it opened. The nonprofit is run by some of the same people who opened Lacey’s House, another home for vets that the state found mishandled funds.
In May, 2013, the OVRC began leasing the house at 272 Walnut Street in Hillsboro. The large home, last purchased for $80,000, is in serious disrepair. It currently houses five veterans who pay a total of $1,850 dollars in rent, according to Wayne Backlund, OVRC Vice President.
Backlund said the OVRC pays the property owner $1,700 in rent each month, not including utilities, leaving the nonprofit little to no money to cover the cost of utilities and home repairs.
Public tax records obtained from the Oregon Department of Justice, paint a different financial picture of the nonprofit. Records show that between May 21, 2013 and December 31, 2013, the OVRC paid $4,263 in rent, which breaks down to $710.50 per month.
