The ISIL terrorist group, with members from several Western countries, now controls parts of Iraq and Syria, and has been involved in a series of heinous crimes during recent years against civilians and government forces in the two Arab countries.
Many believe that ISIL Takfirism is largely influenced by Wahhabism, the radical ideology that has strong presence in Saudi Arabia and freely preached by Saudi scholars. Riyadh has long been accused of supporting terrorist organizations such as the ISIL in Syria, Iraq and elsewhere as maintained by the governments in Damascus and Baghdad.
Turkey has also been one of the main supporters of the militancy against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, with reports showing that Ankara actively trains and arms militants operating in Syria. Recent documents published by the Turkish daily, Cumhuriyet, exposed direct contacts between Turkish intelligence service (MIT) and ISIL militants.
In this episode of Comment, we see how some Western countries and their regional allies have helped fund ISIL through purchasing the oil smuggled out of Iraq and Syria, the historical artifacts, and other direct and indirect ways.
