Veterans dorm in jail aims to restore sense of mission learned in military

Eighteen veterans stood at attention beneath an American flag that rippled in the day’s warm wind. Dressed in identical uniforms, they formed a wide half-circle, watching in silence as one of their comrades pulled a rope to lower the flag into the hands of two other men.
Hewing to military protocol, the pair folded the nylon rectangle 13 times into a triangle the size of a football. As one cradled it in his right arm, a voice broke the quiet. “Flag detail – dismissed!”
The trio turned and walked in single file toward a gate in a chain-link fence topped with razor wire. The others, moving clockwise in their circle formation, fell in line behind them as the group returned to its living quarters at the Travis County State Jail.
