More affordable housing for homeless veterans is opening in Eugene. The group, “Housing Our Veterans” revealed their newest project on Friday. It’s a single family home converted into “single room occupancy” housing for veterans.
The house is on Elmira Road in the Bethel area. Veterans can rent the bedrooms in the house and share a communal kitchen and living room. Veterans can establish rental histories through the “single room occupancy” units and pay for their rents through Section 8 Subsidies or “Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing” Vouchers.
Jeff Engelsted, a veteran who struggles with addiction, found Lorie Perkins and her group, “Housing Our Veterans” after he returned from treatment and was on the brink of homelessness. He now lives in SRO housing with several other veterans.
“It’s been an amazing, blessed ride. It’s been from where I was to where I’m at now is a miracle all together,” Engelsted said.
