Veterans' Christmas wishes fulfilled in record time

Sitting in her wheelchair in the halls of the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans, Harriet Simmons gently smiled Monday with her hands folded in her lap as she listened to the soft jazz music.
The 95-year-old, who served in World War II in the Women’s Army Corps, loves music, particularly the song “Blue Skies,” by Ella Fitzgerald.
“I used to sing,” said Simmons, her bright blue eyes glistening as she grinned ear to ear.
Simmons was one of the 11 veterans who was featured on the Military Wishes 2015 list published by The Grand Rapids Press. Nine veterans were from the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans and the remainder were from the Walker Army Strong Community Center.
“If somebody could be so kind, my wish would be for a five-disc CD changer so that I could listen to music for longer periods of time since I have difficulty getting up and changing the discs,” she wrote.
