Samford University students hosted a rally Saturday at Veterans Park in Hoover to raise awareness for student veterans.
Senior Kathleen Sharp was one of the organizers.  As a public relations major, she was assigned the Student Veterans of America, a non-profit, as a client for her senior project.
“I didn’t even know that student veterans were on campus where I go to school,” Sharp said.
Sharp and her classmates teamed up with Samford Campus Veterans Association to plan the rally. Sharp says she has learned much about issues affecting student veterans.
“They are students just like us. They are in class with us and [we should] not treat them any differently…they are a student as well,” she said.
That’s why Sharp says she is happy that more than 30 people attended today’s rally. Her team is calling student veterans in Birmingham, “Iron Veterans.”
Jordan Michael Thompson is a veteran, law student at Samford, and founder of the Campus Veterans Association.
