Earlier this year, San Antonio city leaders pledged to have all homeless veterans off the streets by Thursday. While they did not provide KSAT any specific numbers Thursday about how many veterans are still on the streets, some homeless veterans say they’re still waiting for help.
There are many reasons why veterans end up on the streets.
“I’ll be honest with you, drug problems got me into this situation,” said a homeless veteran who did not want to be identified, but wanted to share his story.
He served four years in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, got out, turned to drugs, got in trouble with the law, and ended up homeless.
“I haven’t been like this all my life. I’ve had families. I’ve been married twice,” he said. Now he’s off drugs, working a steady job, and looking to pick up the pieces.
“There’s veterans that are like me, they want to work (and) they want to be part of society. Some of us are convicted felons but we still want to do that. All we’re asking is for a chance and that’s it,” he said.
He’s heard of the city’s initiative to help homeless veterans, and supports it. Family Endeavors, an organization helping with the initiative, just recently got in touch with him and he hopes he’ll soon have a roof over his head.
