Volunteers will be on hand Thursday in New Kensington to help area veterans obtain military benefits.

Douglas Mosley, a national service officer for the Military Order of the Purple Heart, will be available at the Community Health Clinic on Fourth Avenue to assist veterans.

Mosley said he can help with issues including compensation, pensions, missing medals and discharge upgrades.

Mosley said medical conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injuries weren’t well understood in earlier wars and many combat veterans with undiagnosed symptoms were deemed to have behavioral problems that led to less-than-honorable discharges.

Veterans with less-than-honorable discharges typically cannot receive military benefits.

“They should have been medically addressed,” Mosley said.

He said if a veteran has been diagnosed with PTSD or an anxiety disorder, “It’s a very good chance” they can have their discharge upgraded and be eligible for benefits.

Mosley believes many veterans don’t know they now may be eligible for an honorable discharge.
