Veterans, local agencies team up for county Stand Down

When Darrell Nixon approached a man at a New Castle service station recently, all he was hoping for was a chance to wash the man’s windshield in exchange for a few bucks.
But when the homeless New Castle man flashed his Veterans Affairs card to John Barton, his life took a sudden turn for the better.
“I told him, I can do a lot better than that for you,” said Barton, a veteran’s outreach specialist for Lawrence County Social Services, who happened to be “in the field, looking for homeless vets.”
