It was 2005 when then-active Army Lt. Colonel Kerry Reyna watched as every employee on the tarmac of her Southwest Airlines flight stopped to recognize the flag-draped casket carrying her father.
“The chief pilot came over, and said that Chief Petty Officer Byrnes was on his final journey home,” Kerry says of her father, a Navy Reservist who served during Vietnam and the Cuban Missile Crisis. “This was before the dignified transfer was vogue. Not one person knew my father, but every one of them respectfully honored his life and service.”
It was a vision Kerry would call to mind more than a decade later as she submitted an application to work at Southwest Airlines after retiring from an esteemed 24 years as an active duty logistics officer with the Army
