Kane County Veterans Assistance Commission Superintendent Jacob Zimmerman researched the idea of establishing a special court for veterans when he joined the office three years ago. Zimmerman believes such courts help veterans connect with services they need while saving counties money.
Everywhere it’s been done in Illinois, it’s been successful, he said. Plus, the cost is minimal “because the folks are in the system, and it saves the county money because we use resources the VA (Veterans Affairs) has,” Zimmerman said.
Illinois law, however, didn’t require counties to set up veterans courts, and local officials were not creating them on their own, Zimmerman said.
