On a recent afternoon, students at a University of Illinois residence planned a small celebration, before everyone scattered for the Thanksgiving break.
The scent of roasting sweet potatoes emanated from the kitchen as junior Ashlee Barkeloo prepared her share of the holiday meal for her housemates. A graduate student sat nearby, flipping through his homework and teasing that the potatoes may be burning. Other students played video games in a lounge.
