While scammers have been around forever, they have really been facilitated by the dawn of the Internet.

Now, you can end up losing vast sums of money without ever having to meet any of these people in a face-to-face setting. When people hear about scams on the news, they often believe that they couldn’t possibly ever fall victim to them as there is something innate in their psychology that wouldn’t allow for this to happen. In fact, anyone can become a victim, but knowing some of the top reasons why people fall into common traps can go a long way towards helping to protect yourself properly.

Identity Deception

A lot of scamming these days comes from people who are pretending to be someone else. Often, scammers will pretend to be from your bank or building society. This can come in the form of phone calls, but it often comes in an email format, which can be difficult to recognize as the branding can look the same, and sometimes the websites that scammers can look exactly the same as the real sites. Essentially, you need to be wary and double-check to make sure that the person is who they say they are. Rather than clicking through any links that you find on the email directly, you should instead visit the site of your own accord through a search engine or by typing in the email address. If you want to verify the identity of a person calling you, say that you will call them back again – preferably through a different phone as hackers can sometimes find ways of staying on the line.

Fear of Missing Out (FOMO)

Another way that scammers get their victims to fall prey to their attacks is by appealing to their fear of missing out – sometimes known as FOMO. You will often see language based around the quick amount of money that you can make, offers that are only valid now, and time-limited deals. If you are feeling like you are being pressured into anything, it is important that you take a step back and take a deep breath. Don’t allow yourself to be bullied into a situation that you are uncomfortable with and never be too quick to hand over your credit card details. Beware of anything that seems too good to be true because it probably is.

Charming Nature

The problem with scammers is that they can often put on a charming demeanor – addressing you by name and finding out personal information by appearing genuinely curious rather than having an ulterior motive in mind. While it is nice to be nice to people, don’t let your guard drop and always beware of strangers who seem to be excessively kind for no particular reason.

These three reasons represent some of the explanations of why people can end up falling victim to scams of various natures. By becoming aware of them, you can protect yourself more effectively.
