The Connection Between Sustainable Development and Public Health

Public health and sustainable development are closely connected. The effects of sustainable development on public health are relatively clear. However, the influence moving in the opposite direction is also worth noting. Work needs to be done in both areas for their mutual success.

Many governments and global organizations create structures where those departments work closely together to set goals and coherent policies. For adequate health care planning to be possible, sustainable development targets need to be set and met. Simultaneously, efforts to measure well-being as an outcome of sustainable development are necessary.

How Different Industries Can Contribute

Government and health organization policies are a step in the right direction. However, every industry has a responsibility to contribute. By taking a sustainable approach, companies can contribute to the improved health of their employees and customers.

Gambling Industry

The Sustainable Gambling Conference in 2021 reached several critical conclusions. One indicated that the current success of the industry is contingent on sustainability. Sportsbooks, Casinos, and related businesses, like Point Spreads, need to collaborate. By working with regulators, they can create a safer gambling atmosphere. It’ll not only prevent detrimental impacts on the player’s well-being, but it’ll also encourage a greater sense of social responsibility.

Food Industry

Food waste and the global supply chain are two crucial areas where the industry can contribute to sustainable development. Shifts towards creating products and dishes that result in less waste are essential. Practices for growing and sourcing seasonal produce will also be instrumental.

Construction

The construction industry has a key role to play in sustainable development. Using sustainable resources is one route. Adjusting practices to produce less waste and pollution will also make a difference. Renovating and repurposing existing structures can help with materials. It also limits changes or harm to existing habitats, which will help the environment and our ecosystem.

Thinking Long Term

Both sustainable development and public health require long-term policies, plans, and goals. Sustainable development means making choices to meet our current needs. However, they shouldn’t compromise the capabilities of future generations.

One of the core considerations is public health. There are economic, social, environmental, and cultural aspects to take into account. These cover a diverse range of areas. They include access to health care, family structures, clean air, and traditions and behaviors.

Poverty, climate change, and attitudes to health care are all major factors. Sustainable development can target these areas to improve our current and future health. Efforts toward public health can contribute to sustainable development. Without a healthy and thriving population, sustainable development will be much more challenging.

Concerns For Quality of Life Standards

The two concepts share a common driving force. Public health and sustainable development are centered around improving quality of life standards. Actions must also not negatively impact those standards for future generations.

Public health policies need to plan and anticipate the health needs of the population. To do so, it needs to have adequate models to predict the challenges that people will face. Successful sustainable development can help show what kinds of conditions future generations will be facing.

Without sustainable development, public health policies will need to plan for the worst-case scenario. Those could involve:

  • health conditions as a result of air pollution
  • poor health due to dwindling resources
  • changes to life expectancy
  • reduced access to health care

The Bottom Line

The relationship between public health and sustainable development is a two-way street. Prioritizing our current health needs can help us focus our efforts on sustainable development. In turn, those efforts will help public health planning for future generations.
