The motorcycles crossing the Goethals Bridge into Staten Island this morning were escorting a few good men: Soldiers from Walter Reed Army Medical Center.
Seven men wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan left the Washington D.C. military hospital this morning for a weekend free of doctors and rehabilitation.
They are being hosted by the AmVets John R. Tamburri, Jr. Memorial Post 917, named for one of their brothers who never came home from Vietnam.
Their weekend will include free rooms at the Hilton Garden Inn, a Coast Guard boat ride to Ground Zero and presentations by the Boy Scouts, the Police Department and the Fire Department.
Robert Tamburri, commander of the Westerleigh post which bears his brother’s name, said the support from Staten Islanders was tremendous. Through donations and the sale of 1,000 T-shirts, members were also able to bring a van loaded with health and comfort items to Walter Reed for soldiers in the hospital.
"This shows our heroes that a lot of people care about them and appreciate what they sacrificed for us," said Tamburri, also recognizing the heroics of the family members of the injured men.
They will return to Walter Reed following a grand send-off Breakfast at the Hilton on Sunday.
Staten Island artist Scott Lobaido will paint an American flag and the Richmond County Pipes and Drums will salute them before another motorcycle escort leads them back.
