A true American Hero

By Peter Macdonald

This Man could be any Veteran because every Veteran is a hero’s to me. On Veterans day at the Boscawen NH military commentary my wife and I went to say thank you as we do every Veterans day. We were standing on the side walk that passes through the Marine Corps Memorial reading the names. This Veteran walking with the Governor of NH (Lynch) and a large group noticed my base ball cap with the words Marine Corps on it.

This Veteran separated himself from the group and walked alone over to shake my wife’s and my hand and say thank you. We talked for a few minutes until the rest of the crowd realized where this Veteran was and caught up. As this Veteran walked away and the crowd followed at the end of the group was Governor Lynch. He noticed me as I put my hand out to shake his. The Governor turned his head away from me, stepped to the other side of the walk way and continued past me and my wife.

Hundreds of Veterans and family were standing listening to speakers at the microphone. Each speaker and there was a long line such as Sununu, Lynch, top brass from the military and others all giving political speeches on how many great things each did for Veterans. The Veteran (Hero) was the key note speaker. This man never once mentioned anything that was even remotely political or for self gain. He talked about Veterans and one POW friend from the Vietnam Conflict. He told how the POW made an American Flag out of scrape material and how each day all the POWs in his hooch would say the Pledge of Allegiance to it. He told how the guards found this flag and took this POW out for a serve beating and destroyed the flag. When the POW was returned to the hooch in great pain, injured from the beating went to the wall and sat starting to make another flag. This POW made the flag because he knew how important it was to the other POW”S.

My purpose of this letter is not political. Whom I will vote for I have not decided. I want this letter to tell the American People what a Veteran is. I want the people of the U.S. to realize what the children that join the Military and become Veterans go through. I want the people to realize this is the only person at the Veterans cemetery that was proud enough to speak for and to the Veterans with out self promotion. This Veteran is John McCain and I want to thank him for shaking a no-body and his wife’s hand.

Thank You John McCain

I apologize that I do not remember the POW’s name
