DELUSIONAL POLITICAL PUNDIT PUTS HOLLAND OHIO ON THE MAP

By Gordon Duff

But for the grace of an interstate highway, I might live in Holland, Ohio.  As it is, I live less than a mile from the infamous unlicensed plumber duped into playing the fool for John McCain.  My real hope is that somehow, making use of his temporary fame, Joe can bilk one of the idiot media mediocrities into giving him enough money to pay up his back taxes and get that plumbers license.  Better this turns out a time when someone was accidentally in the right place instead of the wrong one.

Holland, Ohio is a small town buried between shopping malls in highly Democratic Lucas County, in a part of Ohio that has suffered disastrously from Republican fiascos.  The head of the Lucas Republican Party (Tom Noe) will be out of prison in 20 years after his conviction for theft of millions in state funds tied to an election-rigging scandal.  Former Governor Taft was also convicted of ethics violations but not jailed.  Republicans lost the Governorship, a Senate seat, and any credibility in the “Coingate” scandal.

Holland is an old town, small homes, quite modest, but yet, a pretty nice place to live.  Average home value is probably under $100k and unemployment, foreclosures and tough times locally have had their impact.

Joe’s ambition is admirable considering he lives within 5 miles of literally hundreds of abandoned homes, some many times the value of his own, emptied by factory closures, lost jobs, and broken dreams.  Even the poor and unemployed will likely cough up the bucks when their toilets back up or their basements flood.  Doctors and plumbers will always have work as long as people smoke, overeat, and continue to flush.

Holland got a Walmart nearby recently.  Holland is near one of the busiest highway exits in the U.S.  Escaping the cosmopolitan pressures of all the Michiganders driving past or the large numbers of Asian doctors teaching at the University of Toledo Medical College a few minutes away, Holland survives on a yearly Strawberry Festival and Friday Night Fish Fry’s and Sunday Breakfast Buffets at the local VFW.  Had my mother not died last year, I would have bought her a home here as Holland is almost identical to the small town in Kentucky she spent her last years in.

Political feelings run high in Northeast Ohio.  Jobs are rare and times are tough.  Several area businesses that sported Bush/Cheney signs during the last election mysteriously lost enough clientele to leave their locations with permanent “For Lease” signs.  Political and religious discussions in Ohio are more likely to lead to guns and fists than consensus.

Hearing Joe talks about Obama and “socialism,” obvious to anyone a whispered prompt from a McCain hack is particularly amusing.  I depend on people like Joe to have horse sense when few others do.  With “RoboCalls” from McCain every few hours, talking about how Obama plans on bombing the Pentagon and bringing terrorists into the US (hard to understand exactly what they say, jabbering along 200 miles per hour from one outlandish claim to another) getting on local nerves, Joe is likely to not be doing himself any favors, careerwise.

As much as I have lost faith in the political system in the U.S., I had hoped that we could have a horse race instead of having to watch one candidate jump from one bizarre and destructive act to another.  The John McCain of the 2000 election, though never a friend to the middle class or veterans still had some principles and backbone.

The McCain of Crazy Joe “the Plummer” is a terrified blowhard trying to drag anyone he can down the drain with him.  In Sarah “Barracuda”, McCain picked one of the few people who might actually benefit from association with a spineless blithering fool and his pack of incompetent liars.  Take solace where one can.
