OCRACOKE, N.C. — A memorial service is planned on the Outer Banks for British sailors who died when their ships were torpedoed in 1942 off the North Carolina coast.
The Coast Guard says the annual service on Friday morning is open to the public. It will be held at the Ocracoke British Cemetery on Ocracoke Island. Another service for sailors buried on Hatteras Island was scheduled for Thursday morning.
The sailors’ bodies were recovered from the HMS Bedfordshire and the British merchant ship Sandelfino after German U-boats sank them off the Outer Banks during World War II. The ships were working with the U.S. Coast Guard and Navy to protect American shipping lanes.
