AP-MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. — Fighter jets are flying high over parts of coastal South Carolina as part of a joint civil and military training exercise.

U.S. Air Force F-16 jets are flying Tuesday and Thursday near the Mount Pleasant Army National Guard Armory as part of a weeklong communications exercise happening in South Carolina and several other states, including Arizona, New Jersey and Texas.

The exercise is coordinated by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and a joint military command. Organizers say the drill helps test out radio, Internet and satellite communications if there is a large-scale event .The Charleston County’s Sheriff’s Office is also participating, helping coordinate information to state and federal officials.
