Military training exercise is Alaska state's largest

The USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) operated in the Gulf of Alaska on Tuesday, June 23, 2009, in support of the joint military training exercise Northern Edge. The Nimitz-class nuclear-power aircraft carrier is nearing the end of a scheduled 6-month deployment for maritime security in the western Pacific and will return to its home port in Bremerton, Wa. Over 5,000 sailors and Marines are serving on the aircraft carrier, of which, almost 30 are Alaskans. Northern Edge is the largest training exercise in Alaska which includes U.S. active duty, National Guard, and reserve component soldiers, sailor, airmen, and Marines.
