VETERANS TODAY EDITOR – TOM BARNES
AUTHOR – CONSCIENCE TO MANY
By Gordon Duff VETERANS TODAY
My actual job here is Chairman of the Editorial Board. Behind the articles you see and the activities you don’t, a family, sometimes as dysfunctional as any in America, is working to put out a daily publication with rage when required, humor when possible and more real life than can be found in any other resource for veterans and military.
Tom Barnes is a vital part of that. He provides moral direction, call it "unrelenting" moral direction. He has helped build what we have, something that drives angry "flat earth" denialists crazy because we have the courage to tell the truth and, too often, tell the truth nobody else will touch.
Tom makes people think. Sometimes he drives me to "hang out the wash." Without a moral center we would be nothing, we would be toothless, weak and cowardly. We are far from that.
Find another site that has writers who answer email, help with medical or legal problems and deal with more tragedy and grief, behind the scenes, than you would ever guess. The work Tom and I have done. No, that’s not right. Bobby may be the hardest worker here. Few see what he really does, or our nurses, Denise and Carol or Sandy Cook or Mark Siljander…
Bob Rosebrock spends each day fighting for Veterans land in Los Angeles. We are, every day, joined by organizations from every area of military and veterans life, groups and individuals who share our need to protect America and the things that make the country stay "America."
There may actually be hundreds contributing here, many unseen and, perhaps, needed to remain unseen, that drive us.
Few people in this world inspire as much hate and fear and the writing staff here. I am proud of my part in it and am the one best prepared to take on the heavy guns. We don’t get "heavy guns." We only get frightened and angry people, sometimes confused, often seriously mentally ill, raving at the moon.
We get no pleasure from their pain, even if they spend their lives trying to inflict it on others.
Tom is more patient with them than I am. I see them as rabid dogs, poisoning the lives of many, setting a tone for a pack mentality. Tom tries to see them as people, sometimes succeeding, often not.
Everything is about honor, trust and honesty.
If you don’t see it where it shines brightest, as yourself why you are blind, don’t simply rave at those who help you see.
Buy Tom’s books and read them. He is a great writer and, moreover, a human being, something less and less common.
We are human beings here, not harmless, not by a damn sight, but human. Tom makes us more so.
