The Polish Legion of American Veterans hosted its 10th annual Polka Picnic Sunday.

Every year, the legion hosts a picnic for members to just have fun. All the profits from the picnic go toward helping hospitalized veterans at several area VA hospitals and clinics.

Ken Milenovic, the state commander of the legion, said the group spends its time and resources helping these veterans get to church, get their benefits and feel celebrated for their service to the country. They serve coffee and doughnuts at the centers, play bingo, serve as honor guards and promote fellowship.

"We help the veterans that are honorably discharged from the service," he said. "We work hard, but today we play. We polka, we eat and we socialize."  Julie Van Wagenen/Sun NewsJoseph and Mary Ellen of Parma came to the picnic to listen to the music.

The Honky Tonk Express played while the attendees ate sausages, pierogies, hot dogs and many other delicious Polish dishes.

Some members were happy just to be with friends and relax. Others played games such as a water balloon toss, Frisbee and cornhole.

Barb Ritchey of Willoughby said, "This is a great way for everybody to get together in a relaxed atmosphere instead of just a business setting."
