NEW PHILADELPHIA —

CantonRep.com staff report-The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post held a bake sale and chicken barbecue  to benefit the traveling Vietnam Veterans Memorial wall display coming to Dennison in August.

The wall, a replica of the memorial in Washington, D.C., will arrive Aug. 6 with a motorcycle escort and parade through Uhrichsville and then Dennison on its way to the Dennison Park. The free display will be open to the public, 24 hours a day, with programs and ceremonies planned throughout its stay.

The wall’s arrival is part of the Dennison Railroad Depot Museum’s third annual American Soldiers Homecoming and in partnership with the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 857.

May 16, the Dennison Depot Museum held a pancake breakfast at Trax restaurant. The all-you-can eat pancake and sausage breakfast is $7 for adults and $5 for children.

The Depot was also seeking sponsors for crosses. Throughout the Soldiers Homecoming, 3,100 wooden white crosses will be on display near the wall display at the old Dennison football stadium representing all Ohioans killed in Vietnam. The display will be open 24 hours a day, lighted, and is free. Crosses can be sponsored for $5 a piece and will go to area cemeteries after the festival. They are being handmade by local veterans.

Sponsorship also is available for the bricks that will be used in the walkway at the wall. The bricks, made locally by Bowerston Shale, will be stamped “Vietnam Traveling  Memorial Wall, American Soldiers Homecoming, Dennison, Ohio, August 2009” and will be laid in front of the wall. The cost is $20 per brick and sponsors can pick them up to keep after the festival.

For more details, or to be placed on an e-mail list for upcoming festival and wall announcements, call (740) 922-6776 or e-mail [email protected].
