A Sunday News Cycle That Might Interest Veterans – W.P. and NY Times

Here are some headlines from today’s Washington Post that may be of interest to veterans.

The Prime Minister of Iraq publicly chides the military officer that attempted to arrest American soldiers when they attacked insurgents.  The story is here.  Here is the story about how the F-22 program has been stopped by the President and supporters in Congress at great price.  46 states have jobs tied to the program but it is wasteful expenditure of dwindling resources according to Sec. of Defense Gates.  Here is the story.

Pakistan has arrested a prominent pro-Taliban imam for backing anti-government violence.  He was the same guy that brokered a peace deal between the Pakistani armed forces and the isurgents a few months ago.  Here is the story. And in news that has absolutely no national defense significance whatsoever but does have significance to me, the police chief of the city where I live, Alexandria, Virginia, got booked last night for driving drunk and getting in an accident.  The story is here.  Why could this not have happened to one unnamed politician who I think very lowly of?

     

In today’s New York Times, the following article might be of interest to veterans.

An American Marine sergeant talks about how bold the Afghani insurgents can be.  The story is here. 

In an odd story that might have definite defense applications, a gathering of scientists disccus their worries that machines may now be on the verge of becoming so smart that they are now a danger to humans.  They can now act on their own. The story is here.

Here is a bizarre article outlining how a war criminal, Radavan Karadzic hid from the world behind a beard and a New Age philosophy encompassing the sale of nutty ideas and items.  Here is the story.

Here is an Opinion piece from Thomas Friedman outlining his front line view of how the Wahhabist extremists throughout Islam hang onto power.  They stoke the flames of inra-Islam cultural tensions to keep various types of Muslims divided and various groups within Islam oppressing other groups.  It is a strong insight into the Taliban, Osama Bin Laden and other Wahhabist based Islamist insurgent groups.  The story is here.
