GI Bill Tuition AssistanceThe Department of Defense is the agency responsible for the four branches of military service in this country.  Those branches – The Navy, the Marine Corps, Army and the Air Force – are honored by this every citizen in this country on May 16th, the national holiday known as Armed Forces Day. Honoring those who serve was established during President Harry S. Truman’s administration.  He was the primary motivator to establish a single day to pay our respects to those who perform such a patriotic service for this country.  Once compiled under the Department of Defense, the four branches as the Armed Forces received national recognition.

Education Connection, as well as the entire nation, wishes to express a ‘thank you’ on this Armed Forces Day to all who serve.  We appreciate all you do to protect the freedom we enjoy.  In the past, we have provided many articles about official sources of education benefits, like active duty tuition assistance and GI Bill benefits.  In this article, we concentrate on various scholarships that are available to the military community by a variety of private and service organizations.  Like us, these agencies wish to express their gratitude for all you do, and offering grants is just one way to show our appreciation.

Scholarships for the military personnel, veterans, and families are numerous.  Learning about these military scholarships is a must as many find out too late that military tuition assistance only covers so much of college costs.  There are additional sources of funding available for college and those covered below are some of the available resources for educational needs.  Some of these scholarships are contingent upon status in the military, members of certain service organizations, and the National Guard.

CSM Baldassari Scholarship Memorial Scholarship:  There are certain requirements for this scholarship.  The legal children of New Jersey National Guard Members who are also members of the Enlisted Association may submit applications for consideration. Previous recipients are not eligible for subsequent awards. Also, any drilling guardsperson who is a member of this association may submit an application for the CSM Baldassari Scholarship.

Marine Corps Sgt Jeannette L. Winters Memorial Scholarship:  This scholarship is open to Marine Corps members who meet defined specifications.  U.S. Marine Corps candidates must be majoring in the following or related fields: electrical, chemical, systems or aerospace engineering; electronics; mathematics; physics; science or mathematics education; technology management; management information systems; or computer science. Majors directly related to the support of U.S. Intelligence enterprises or national security with relevance to the mission of the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association (AFCEA) will also be eligible. Minimum GPA requirement is 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

Jodi Callahan Scholarship:  Those who are pursuing a Master’s Degree in a non-technical field of study are eligible if they are:  (1) full time Air National Guard; (2) full time Air Force reserve (enlisted or officer); or (3) active duty Air Force.

University of Wyoming Vietnam Veterans Award:  If you are a Wyoming veteran and were in active military service between August 5, 1964, and May 7, 1975, and you received a Vietnam service medal between those dates, then you are eligible for this scholarship.

10th Mountain Division Descendant Merit Scholarship:  This merit scholarship offered by the Tenth Mountain Division Foundation is for descendants who performed meritorious service to the World War II 10th Mountain Division (above all other applying descendants).  Up to five scholarships are expected to be awarded.

Charles W. and Annette Hill Scholarship Fund:  The difference here is that this is an outright grant of $1,000, not a scholarship.  Those who apply must be the descended of a veteran, maintaining a membership (for the last three years) in the The Kansas American Legion, who is also currently either a Kansas high school senior or a college-level freshman or sophomore.  The death of a member is not a factor if as a member of the organization dues were paid up at the time of death.  Such descendants may also apply.

Connecticut National Guard Foundation Scholarship Program:  This state-dependent scholarship eligibility requirements fit two criterion:  Children of a member of the Connecticut ARMY National Guard can present an application; and members or their sons, daughters, or spouses of the Connecticut National Guard and Organized Militia.

Army Engineer Memorial Awards (AEMA):  The Army Engineer Memorial Awards are open for descendants with a parent who meets certain specifications.  Either an (at present) active duty U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Officer, a retired U.S. Army Corps of Engineer Officer, or a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Officer who died (either while on active duty or after retiring from active duty).

Army Engineer Association Memorial Scholarship Program:  The Army Engineer Association requirements for eligible applicants contains exacting specifications.  Eligibility includes current AEA Members in the grades or ranks: Commissioned Officers: 2LT, 1LT, CPT; Department of Army Civilian Employees: GS1 thru GS9; Warrant Officer: WO1, WO2; Enlisted: PVT, PFC, SPC, CPL, SGT, SSG.

The Scholarship must be used for tuition, books, or room and board.
